TWHBEA announces 2023 Hall of Fame and Master Breeders

TWHBEA announces 2023 Hall of Fame and Master Breeder Honorees

The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association (TWHBEA) has announced this year’s recipients of its two most prestigious awards. A total of eight horses will be inducted into this year’s class of the Hall of Fame and two individuals will be recognized as Master Breeders. To be inducted into the TWHBEA Hall of Fame, horses must qualify in at least one of three categories: Breeding, Show Ring Accomplishment and Ambassadorship of the breed. The TWHBEA Master Breeder Award recognizes those breeders whose body of work over an extended period of time has had a significant and long-lasting impact on the Tennessee Walking Horse breed. Each year’s honorees are voted on by the standing Executive Committee, past TWHBEA Presidents, past Master Breeders and two TWHBEA members-at-large. This year’s honorees will be recognized at the TWHBEA Awards Banquet on Friday, December 1, 2023 at the TWHBEA Auditorium in Lewisburg, Tennessee.

Hall of Fame Mares

My Faith (631314)
Foaled on May 13, 1963, My Faith is by Sun-Dust and out of Pucketts Dream Girl. The mare was bred by Edward C. Puckett and gave birth to her final foal in 1988 at the age of 25. Libby Christmas was the last recorded owner of My Faith. With a total of a dozen offspring, some of the most notable are Pride’s Winning Edge, Pride’s Nite Wind, Prides June P., Final’s Extra Edition, Cindy Pride P., and Final’s Rose. Cumulatively these offspring have earned 34 World Championship and 32 Reserve World Championship titles, 8 World Grand Championship and 6 Reserve World Grand Championship titles, 6 National Futurity Championships, and 6 National Futurity Reserve Championships. Some of the mare’s progeny that are current show ring stars include The Megalodon, Country As Cornbread, and She’s Pushin’ In Line.

Prides Donna (780939)
Bred by Harlin Hayes, this black Hall of Fame mare is by Pride of Midnight H.F. HOF and out of Sun’s Pretty Donna and was foaled on April 10, 1978. She’s said to be Harlinsdale’s favorite mare. She was dam of seven foals – five by Prides Gold Coin HOF and two by his full brother, Pride’s Genius.  She was dam of WGC Coin’s Hard Cash, Gold Power, Coin’s Triple Play, I’m More Than Enough, Polished Apple, Mega Bucks and Motion Picture.

Rock-A-By Lady H. (650177)
Rock-A-By Lady H. was a black mare foaled on April 14, 1963. Sired by Midnight-Rock A Way and out of Go Boy’s Southern Gal, the mare was bred by Homer Burnett of Lexington, Missouri. The talented mare was purchased by Anne Daugette Renfrow after the Celebration during her four-year-old season. After a loss during their first outing at the Southern Championships in Montgomery, Alabama in November of 1967, the team went on to be undefeated for the remainder of their show career, winning at major shows across the United States. When all was said and done, she had won nine Celebration championships and was undefeated at five consecutive Celebrations during her show career with Anne Daugette Renfrow. Rock-A-By Lady H. died in 1971.

Snip’s Chance (460427)
Snip’s Chance, by Last Chance and out of Snip, was foaled on February 15, 1940 and was the dam of the famed “four sisters” – four mares that literally helped shape the Tennessee Walking Horse breed.  Among these were Wilson Snip’s Chance, the dam of Sun’s Delight, Johnny Midnight, Sun’s Hero and Midnight Imp, plus the outstanding broodmares Sun’s Sparkle and Mack K’s Sweetheart; Wilson Chance, the dam of Dean’s Boss Man and Delight’s Chance; and Wilson Chance Snip, the dam of Midnight Ike.  Snip’s Chance was a daughter of the great mare Snip, who was sired by Grey Lad and out of Merry Legs F-4. The female family has produced such greats as Merry Boy, Hunter’s Allen F-10, Last Chance, Bud Allen, Major Allen and many others. Snip’s Chance was bred by A.M. Dement of Wartrace, Tennessee and sold to A.S. Dean as a weanling, who continued to own her throughout her illustrious breeding career.

Hall of Fame Stallions & Geldings

Ebony’s Senator (641156)
Born on January 23, 1964, the black stallion was from the first crop of foals produced by the 1962 World Grand Champion Ebony Masterpiece. He was out of Go Boy’s Merry Maid.  He was bred by S. W. Beech, Jr., later owned by Vic Thompson, O.D. Carlton, The Senator Limited, Ebony’s Senator Partnership, Charles D., Cooper, & Owen Miles, and finally Gamble Farms- Jeff & Sharon Gamble. Shown by Marvin Wilson, one of the trainers at Vic Thompson Stables, Ebony’s Senator was reserve in the Junior Stallion class at the 1968 Celebration. He returned in 1969 to claim the World Grand Championship title on an unforgettable night of mud, water, driving rain, loud thunder, and starling lighting. He was retired from competition under saddle at the 1969 Dixie Jubilee Horse Show in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Haynes Peacock (401185)
The 1940 and 1941 World Grand Champion was a 1928 Chestnut gelding by Wilson’s Allen HOF and out of Nell Monette.  Many horsemen have said that Haynes Peacock had more show horse ways and more bloom than any horse they had ever seen regardless of his age.  He had a way of strutting that caused possibly more favorable comments than most horses of his day. Haynes Peacock and his loving owner/rider, Colonel J.L. Haynes, became the first two-time World Grand Champion. Haynes Peacock was a popular champion and he and Colonel Haynes helped establish the Tennessee Walking Horse as the fastest growing show horse exhibited in America.

Out On Parole (970569)
Out On Parole was a black roan stallion sired by Pusher’s Doing Time and out of the mare Pride’s Golden Doll.  He was foaled on March 25, 1997 and bred by Judy Moore of Shelbyville, Tennessee.  He was sold to Bob Kilgore as a yearling, then sold to Pete Hammond, who sold him to Randall and Sadie Baskin. The Baskins owned him from his two-year-old year until his death.  Out On Parole was trained by Bud Dunn and Son Stables of Florence, Alabama. Bud Dunn trained Out On Parole to canter, but as he was working with RPM, his second World Grand Champion at the time, his son Steve Dunn was Out On Parole’s primary trainer.  Steve Dunn rode Out On Parole in the 1999 Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration and won the Two-Year-Old World Championship.  The following year he won the Three-Year-Old preliminary class but came in reserve in the World Championship. As a four-year-old, he won both his preliminary class and the Junior World Grand Championship title at the Celebration.  The next year he won Division A of the Stallions Class, the traditional first test of horses entering the World Grand Championship and was one of 11 horses entered in the World Grand Championship.  Bud Dunn died in early 2001, and for the big stake Steve Dunn wore the tie his father had worn during both of his World Grand Championship wins.  Out On Parole was named the World Grand Champion for 2002.  Following the win, he was exhibited at many horse shows and once performed at the University of Tennessee homecoming football game.  He was officially retired at the Celebration in 2013, although he continued to be a popular breeding stallion.

Pride’s Jubilee Star (764596)
Born in 1976, the Bay Stallion was by Pride of Midnight H.F. and out of Sun’s Star O. Bred by John N. Ross, he was purchased by Ted and Jane Armour as a yearling.  He was later owned by Buris R. Bushell and purchased in 1984 by Bob Parks of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  Many trainers had a hand in the making of this horse – Dude Crowder, Bill Bobo, Buddy Kirby, Phillip Wilson, Bill Sledge, David Landrum, Ricky Womack, and ultimately Ramsey Bullington.  Shown sparingly, but successfully, the horse known as PJ, garnered the roses for the World Grand Championship in 1986 with Bullington in the irons at 10 years old, and convincingly defeating a ring of younger challengers.  Prides Jubilee Star produced 751 offspring, among them WGC Pride’s Jubilee Encore and WGC Pride’s Sundance Star.  He is great-grandsire of 2018 WGC Gen A’Mighty. His daughters have produced winners from 170 stallions.

Master Breeders

Valton Rummage
When asked for the highlights of his career, a twinkle comes to his eyes as he relates the adrenaline rush of walking around the big oval under the spotlight. But, in the same breath, the pride of watching his children and grandchildren show the horse of his dreams was right up there with those “highlight” moments. Those moments and his involvement in the breeding, raising, and showing Tennessee Walking Horses spans over 50 years. Valton Rummage began breeding mares, raising foals, and showing colts in the late sixties and early seventies. His first registered mare, Threat’s Early Dawn, was purchased in 1969, and his life-long love of the Tennessee Walking horse began. In 1974, the family filling station (as it was called back then) was sold and he switched his career to full time breeding, raising, training and showing colts. He never looked back. His tenure as a breeder, owner and exhibitor has spanned seven decades. In what has now become laughable, he has been telling friends and family for over a decade that he’s retiring “next year”. He is known for his integrity and honesty in buying and selling horses and, likewise, for his vast knowledge of good brood stock, and for his discerning eye in picking out great prospects.

Buddy Wilhelm (posthumous)
Raymond Huey “Buddy” Wilhelm, Jr. was a lifelong farmer, raised on his family’s farm in the Belfast community where he loved hard work, Tennessee Walking Horses, raising beef cattle, working hay, and spending time with family. He was well known for producing World Champions and even better known for providing the expert foaling and breeding services to many that raise Tennessee Walking Horses. Buddy passed away in 2021 at the age of 70.

Celebration selects Fall Classic judges

Celebration selects Fall Classic judges

The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration has selected Scotty Brooks, Jamie Lawrence and Chad Williams to judge the Celebration Fall Classic. The Fall Classic will be held November 2-4, 2023 inside Cooper Steel Arena.

Brooks will be making his first Fall Classic appearance but has judged The Celebration’s Spring Fun Show in 2006, 2010 and 2017 and judged the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in 2017. Brooks has judged the Money Tree and Alabama Jubilee earlier this year.

Lawrence will be marking the cards for the first time at a Celebration event. He too judged a major fourth of July show at the Woodbury Lions Club. Lawrence also judged the FAST Spring Showcase earlier this year.

Williams will also be making his first Celebration appearance. Williams most recently judged the Columbia Spring Jubilee in June of this year.  Williams judged the Walking For Cancer and Classic in Belfast in 2022.

“We are excited to have these three gentlemen judge our Fall Classic.  We continue to want to use additional judges that have not previously judged for us and we also like to make sure we extend our reach so we were excited to be able to have judges that represent Alabama (Lawrence), Tennessee (Williams) and Kentucky (Brooks), said Celebration CEO Warren Wells.

Again, for the 2023 Fall Classic, the Celebration will construct a show ring within the Cooper Steel Arena to allow for ringside tables. These tables are a much-loved aspect of the Fall Classic and provide a close-up look at the action.

The tables will cost $1,500, come with eight seats, eight meal tickets per night, and this year will include an open bar. The tables also qualify for bronze-level sponsorship of the Fall Classic and parking passes.

The show will be a triple-point Riders’ Cup show and culminate with the Andy Adkins Memorial Youth Championship on Saturday night, which has been the tradition for the Fall Show. Again, this year the class sheet features the Debut classes for two-year-olds that have not shown in 2023, and the Celebration will again have one class for Mares and Geldings and one for Stallions. The prize money for the winner of both classes is $3,000 this year. Sponsorship remains available for both classes.

For more information about the 2023 Celebration Fall Classic visit www.TWHNC.com or call the Celebration office at 931-684-5915.

Puckett to replace Parks at North Carolina Championship

The North Carolina Championship is scheduled for October 5-7, at the Western North Carolina Ag Center in Fletcher, North Carolina. Brent Grider, Newton Parks and Amy Trimble were the original slate of judges. Due to recently being diagnosed with covid, Newton Parks is no longer able to judge the show and Johnny Puckett will now take Parks’ place on the panel.

TWH Family mourns Lee Clement Williams

Obituary – Lee Williams

Beloved husband, father, brother, and friend Lee Clement Williams died on September 25, 2023 following a recent illness. Lee is now free from the pain that has dominated his life for the past weeks.  A fighter until the end, he was determined to beat his cancer and gave the dreaded disease a battle like it had never seen. In the end, he won on his terms and has gone to be among the family and friends in the land that knows no pain, no grief, no sorrow – only joy and love.

Lee was born in Bermuda on February 18, 1954 and was the son of the late Dr. John O. Williams, Jr. and the late Anne Kellam Nicks Williams Rochelle.  He was a graduate of Columbia Military Academy (1972) and attended Memphis State University and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Lee is survived by his wife of 18 years, Pam Williams of Brentwood, Tennessee, his sons John Ireland Williams, Benjamin Fox Williams and Luke Christian Williams, all of Brentwood, Tennessee.  He is also survived by his brothers, John Orlando (Kay Kay) Williams, III, David Walton (Theresa) Williams and Thomas Allyn Williams, his sister-in-law Elizabeth Davis Williams, his sister-in-law Becky Ann Curd, his brother-in-law Mark Andrew (Anita) Doss, and his mother-in-law S. Juanita Doss.  He loved his many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his brother, C. Nicks Williams.

Lee grew up in Mt. Pleasant, TN and loved playing sports with his brothers.  He was a child prodigy golfer and won numerous schoolboy type tournaments before leading the Columbia Military Academy golf during his high school years and went to play golf at Memphis State University.

Lee started his real estate career in 1977 with C & S Builders, one of the largest homebuilders in Middle Tennessee at that time.  Sales skyrocketed under the leadership of Lee and his sales team.  When C & S Builders closed, it later re-emerged as Fox Ridge homes and became the preeminent builder in the state.  Later with years of construction experience behind him, Lee opened Williams and Company where he began building homes and continued to sell real estate.  Most recently, he has concentrated on residential and commercial sales.  During his career, he trained hundreds who have trained hundreds.  No house was too small, nor was any buyer shunned due to lack of financial resources.

Lee was passionate about his work with Alcoholics Anonymous .  In the late 1990’s, he was a regular volunteer at Dismas House.  He came monthly to the house on Music Row with a few friends in recovery to share meals.  Lee befriended people just out of prison trying to get back on their feet.  Lee gave generously – with time, wisdom, love and laughter – to people who badly needed it.  He changed many people’s lives.  Lee gave to those who needed it, expecting nothing in return.  He has sponsored and mentored many over the years.   Many have said “I’m a better person because Lee was in my life.”

He led by example and gave 100 percent in everything he did, and he expected no less from those around him.  The best times for him were the times spent with his boys watching sporting events, working in the garden, cooking meals, or watching them play sports.  He loved all his family deeply.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, October 6, 2023 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 9100 Crockett Road, Brentwood, TN  37027.  Visitation will be from 9:00 am – Noon.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Gibson and the staff at Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center for their care over the past few months, the staff at Alive Hospice for their dedicated care over his last days, and his special nurses, Annie and Charlotte.  We’d also like to thank the hundreds of prayer warriors who have been with us throughout Lee’s journey.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the charity of your choice or to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN  37203 or Friendship House, 202 23rd Avenue N., Nashville, TN  37203 in the loving memory of Lee C. Williams

TWH Industry mourns Marvin North

Obituary – Marvin North

The family of the late Marvin North would like to thank you for this special honor for our son, brother, dad and friend!

Marvin Ellis North was born on May 1, 1961, and departed this life on August 29, 2023. He was the second of eight children to the late Joe Ellis North (2011) and Shellie North.

As a youngster, Marvin began to show interest in horses when he got his first horse, a spotted pony he named Bill, who he showed and won numerous ribbons at 4-H shows and county fairs. His love for horses continued when he worked alongside his Dad at the family’s “Little 11 Stables”, where he learned the “North Lick” by mimicking his Dad’s style of riding. Little did we know it would turn into his lifetime passion for riding and training Tennessee Walking horses.

Over the course of his career, Marvin worked with some of the greats at several stables such as Sammy Day at Continental Farms, Billy Gray at Sand Creek Farm, Ramsey Bullington, David Landrum at Ravenswood Farm, Joel and Joe Weaver at Rising Star Ranch and Dick Peebles, just to name a few.

During his career, he was named Assistant Trainer of the Year in 1999. His most notable horse was The Lottery at Ravenswood Farm where he won five first place finishes himself. After he stopped showing The Lottery, he enjoyed training him and was his trainer when he was crowned World Grand Champion with Joe Cotton.

Even with his failing health, Marvin wanted to visit the “Big Oval” one more time and his good friend, Michael Scott made it happen last year when he rode Miss Bad And Bossy into the ring.

The say, “when you do something you love, it isn’t work,” and this was true for Marvin. He lived and breathed for the Tennessee Walking Horses. There are few things in life that calm you, bring you pure joy and making everything all right; for Marvin, it was being next to or on a Tennessee Walking Horse.

Celebration seeks extension of comment period Tuesday, September 5, 2023

Celebration seeks extension of comment period
Tuesday, September 5, 2023

The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration sent a letter seeking a 60-day extension to the comment period on the USDA’s proposed rule published at 88 FR 56924. The letter, sent from Patrick F. Philbin, counsel for The Celebration, points out two major reasons the extension should be granted.

The first highlights the enormous impact the rule would have and how many horses would be affected by the elimination of pads and action devices. This rule would effectively eliminate the entire performance division of horses.

In addition, the letter points out that the USDA published the proposed rule seeking comment just days before the 85th Annual Celebration. The Celebration, and its SHOW HIO, has limited resources to devote to comment on the rule and those resources will be dedicated to The Celebration and the ensuing required reporting by USDA until mid-September. This timeline would exhaust half the comment period and only leave 30 days for The Celebration to comment.

The data collected by the SHOW HIO will be critical in the response and it will take time for that data over the last six years to be accumulated and analyzed to help support the comment from The Celebration. In addition, data from this year’s Celebration will also be critical as the rule eliminates all HIOs and changes the inspection process.

The USDA has not yet replied to The Celebration’s request seeking additional time. The original comment period will end on October 21, 2023 if no extension is granted.

U.S. Veteran

Dr. Dewey Edward Wood passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 20, 2023.  “Doc,” as he was lovingly referred to, was born May 27, 1933 to parents Charlotte Reed Wood and Dewey Otis Wood of Bowling Green, Ky.  He attended Bowling Green High and graduated in 1951.  He also attended Western Kentucky University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1955.  He earned a Doctor of Medicine Degree from University of Louisville in 1960, and completed an internship at University of Louisville General Hospital in 1961.  Upon graduation he went into practice with Dr. Carlisle Dodson in Russellville, Ky. for five years.

In 1966 Dewey was drafted during the Vietnam conflict and served his term as a Commander in the Navy Medical Corps at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.   He later served in the Naval Reserve several years.  Upon his completion of Naval Service, he returned to Russellville and began his own medical practice at 210 Bethel Street where he practiced medicine for 42 years.   In addition to the Russellville office, he maintained an office in Auburn where he also saw patients. During his early years of practice, he delivered over 1500 babies in Logan County—a highlight of his career.

Dr. Wood loved his patients and helping others and was very active within the community.  Dr. Wood served on the Logan County Memorial Hospital Board for several years and as Chief of Staff.  Additionally, he served on the Barren River Health Board, the BRACC (Barren River Child Advocacy Center) Board, the Logan County Crime Stoppers Board, and was inducted into the Bowling Green High School Hall of Honor in 2011.  He was a life member of the American Medical Association, Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians, and Kentucky Medical Association.

In 1966 he bought his first farm which ignited a passion in him for farming.  Over the years, he expanded his farming operation in Logan and Simpson Counties.  He enjoyed spending his free time there and working in the soil.

In 1985, he married Sue Downing of Russellville at The Pepper Place in Allensville, Ky. They were married for thirty-eight years and resided at their home in Russellville.  In his later years, he loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, and he loved going to his farms.

Dewey Wood is survived by wife Sue Downing Wood (Russellville, KY.) and sister Caroline Wood Day (Indianapolis, IN).  Children:  Elizabeth Wood (Durham, NC), Pam Wood Berry (Nolensville, TN), Diane Wood (Lexington, KY), and Chris and Danielle Wood (Lexington, KY). Grandchildren: Nathan Switzer (Durham, NC), Andrew Switzer (Winston-Salem, NC), Bret Berry (Washington D.C.), Brooke Berry (Knoxville, TN) and Luke Wood (Lexington, KY).  He is preceded in death by his mother Charlotte Reed Wood, father Dewey Otis Wood, and brother Royce Wood.

Funeral Arrangements: Young Funeral Home of Russellville, KY.  Visitation will be Friday, August 25 5:00 – 8:00 PM and Saturday August 26 from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM.  The funeral service will be conducted at Young’s Funeral Home at 2:00 PM. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Russellville.   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation be made to the following:
